Why Is My Sound System Buzzing?

Buzzing or hum usually enters the system through a source, cable, power relationship, connection or failing piece of equipment. The fastest diagnosis comes from determining where in the signal path the noise begins.

Short answer: Buzzing or hum usually enters the system through a source, cable, power relationship, connection or failing piece of equipment. The fastest diagnosis comes from determining where in the signal path the noise begins.

Does the buzz affect everything?

If every loudspeaker has the same noise, start upstream. If only one zone or speaker is affected, inspect that specific channel, cable and speaker path first.

Common causes

  • Loose or damaged audio cable
  • Unbalanced connection picking up interference
  • Source device or power-supply noise
  • Ground-related noise between connected equipment
  • Failing amplifier, mixer or processor

Safe first checks

Note which speakers buzz, whether changing the source changes the noise, and whether the buzz is present when the system is otherwise silent. Avoid opening powered equipment unless qualified.
