For a speech-focused indoor event
A common starting point is a pair of appropriately sized powered speakers, a small digital mixer and the microphones required by the program. Long or wide rooms may benefit from additional loudspeakers for even coverage.
For music or dancing
Music generally requires more headroom and low-frequency capability than speech. Depending on the room, adding subwoofers and additional loudspeakers may be appropriate.
For an outdoor event
Outdoor sound has no walls or ceiling to reinforce it, so coverage and available output become more important. The layout of the audience area matters as much as the headcount.

- Speech, music, live performance or a mixture?
- Room dimensions and audience layout?
- How many microphones?
- Playback from a laptop, phone or presentation system?
- Does the event need a technician?
